Shirey Archie (Archie) Obituary

Shirey Archie Jr., affectionately known as Archie, passed away suddenly on August 14, 2023, at his home in Albany, NY, at the age of 74. He leaves behind a legacy of service, dedication, and love for his community and family.

Archie's journey began in local schools, culminating in his graduation from Niagara County Community College. He answered the call to serve his country with honor, joining the United States Army. During his service, he earned the National Defense Service Medal and Army Commendations for his exemplary contributions. He was honorably discharged in 1971 from Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Returning to the Niagara Falls area, Archie embarked on a diverse career path, contributing his skills to various roles. A significant chapter of his life unfolded in Albany, NY, where he became an integral part of the New York State Thruway Authority, as an Accounts Payable Supervisor, ultimately retiring after years of dedicated service. Once he retired, he still felt the call to serve and he went BACK to work as an Eligibility Examiner for Albany County DSS, assisting residents with financial management concerns.

Archie's heart was deeply connected to social justice causes, and he actively participated in numerous movements within his community. An unwavering advocate for equality and change, he took a prominent stance every first Saturday of the month with his "Stand Against Racism." His involvement extended to artistic expressions as well, performing live or in film with Creative Action Unlimited. Archie's commitment also resonated with issues of food access, as he engaged with Soul Fire Farms to reconnect people with nourishment.

A true embodiment of his beliefs, Archie lived by the principle "Be the Change you want to see in others and your community!" His actions spoke volumes, demonstrating his readiness to help others without expecting anything in return. He was a cherished and long-standing Friend of Bill W., offering guidance and support to those seeking it.

Archie's memory will forever be treasured by his devoted mother, Floydell Archie of Niagara Falls; his life partner, Orokia (Rose) Sidibe; his sons Brian S. Archie Sr. (Latresse), Zakariah B. Archie, and special son Amadou (Fatima) Kante. He is survived by his beloved sister Brenda (Melvin) Archie-Cunningham of Grand Island, NY; brothers Larry (Mary) Archie of Syracuse, NY, and Anthony Archie of Niagara Falls. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Brian Jr., Brandon, Lateef, Bria, Brionna, Breajah, Rukayyah, Alassane, and Abba; great-grandchildren Jayden Archie, Sincere Archie, Christian Archie, Mya Leigh Christina, Lateef Jr., Bryson Archie and Malikai Carr-Archie and a host of family and friends.

A memorial service to honor Archie's life will be held on Monday, August 21, at the New Hope Baptist Church, located at 1122 Buffalo Avenue, NF NY 14304. Viewing will take place from 11 a.m. to noon, followed by the service at noon.
