Newport, TN - Herbert F. Shafer of Newport, TN, formerly of Sanborn, NY, passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2026 at the age of 90.

He was a member of Ironworkers Local # 9 , N Falls, NY since 1961, Niagara County Sherriff Depart., Lockport, NY, Deputy Conservation and Border Patrol, 1973-2005 until moving to Tennessee.

He was an avid hunter man, fisherman, and trapper throughout his life. He met many special guys at Ron's Bait Shop in Tennessee where he was known as "Trapper." He lived a full adventurous life and left many wonderful memories along the way that will be cherished forever.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years in 2021, Carol (Steingasser) Shafer; parents Clarence and Myrtle (Ivings) Shafer; father-in-law and mother-in-law Jacob and Violet (Becker) Steingasser; brothers-in-law Larry Steingasser, Jerry Toellner, and Jerry Schmidt; and sister-in-law Joyse (Steingasser) Schmidt.

He is survived by his children Debra Hoover, Donna Stevens both of Newport, TN, and Daw Knooihien of Las Vegas, NY; son-in-law Alan Knooizhen of Newport, TN; grandchildren Brian (Mary) Hoover of Sanborn, NY, Tammy Hoover of N Falls, NY, Tonya (Jeremy) Tierney of N Falls, NY, Jarelle (Owen) Johnson of Las Vegas, NY, David (Sierra)Morgan of Greeneville, TN, Danyelle, Joseph, and Joey Hilditch, and Jessica Stevens all of Las Vegas, NC; fourteen great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; sister-in-law Lorrain Steingasse of Sanborn, NY and Judith Toellner of Mesam AZ; brother-in-law Robert (Cheryl) Steingasser of N Falls, NY; and special friend Dean Ross of Newport.

The family will receive from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 26, 2026 at Manes Funeral Home.

Graveside Service will be at 1 p.m., Wednesday, May 27, 2026 in Union Cemetery. Burial will follow.
