Gregory T. Atkinson Obituary
Niagara Falls, NY - Gregory T. Atkinson, 78, of Niagara Falls, New York, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 30, 2026, with his wife, Dorothy, at his side under the care of Niagara Hospice. Born in Niagara Falls, NY he was the son of the late Theodore and Betty (Myers) Atkinson.
Greg, a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, NY, attended local schools and graduated from LaSalle Senior High School in 1965. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1967 until his honorable discharge in 1969. He then began a long and respected career as an electrician with Olin Chemical Company, where he worked faithfully until his retirement. He was known for his strong work ethic, reliability, and the pride he took in his craft.
Greg had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and enjoyed hunting in the Southern Tier for many years. He also found joy in bowling and playing euchre with family and friends. In his younger years, Greg was active in several hockey and softball leagues, reflecting his lifelong love of sports. Following his retirement, he especially cherished his daily visits with his brothers-in-law, John and Jim, where together they would "solve the problems of the world."
But nothing brought Greg more joy than watching his grandchildren's sporting events, concerts, and activities, proudly supporting them until his illness made it difficult.
He will be deeply missed by his devoted wife of 42 years, Dorothy (Tomaszewski), whom he married on April 27, 1984. He is also survived by three children: Rhonda (Shawn) Vekich; Randall (Rushia) Coughenour; and Renee (Jason) McKenzie. Greg was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren — Kaila (Nicholas) Ochoa, Madison Vekich; Randall Coughenour; Tyler McKenzie; Connor McKenzie; and Kaylee McKenzie—who all lovingly knew him as "Pa."
Greg is also survived by two brothers, Gary Atkinson of Niagara Falls, NY, and Gavin (Terry) Atkinson of The Woodlands, TX, as well as his brothers-in-law Gerald (JoAnne) Tomaszewski, John (late Rebecca) Tomaszewski and James (Loretta) Tomaszewski and several nieces and nephews.
Greg will be remembered for his kind nature, and the deep love he had for his family. He was generous to a fault and never knew the word "no" when it came to those he loved. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. May you find peace, Greg, free from the struggles of COPD.
