Niagara Falls, NY - Frank Calovini , 87, of Niagara Falls, NY passed away peacefully on May 10, 2026 at Niagara Hospice House in Lockport, NY, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Sheppton, PA, he was the only child of Frank E. and Catherine (Lucash) Calovini. Frank moved to Niagara Falls at the young age of three and went through the Niagara Falls school system, graduating from LaSalle Senior High School in 1957.
Frank excelled in sports through his youth, playing left half-back for the LaSalle Explorers under Coach Litchka, winning the Niagara Frontier League Championship for the second time in three years, breaking the school record of scoring 66 points. Frank played semi-pro ball for five years for the Niagara Falls Chiefs. He played volleyball and baseball for the LaSalle Sportsman Club and other local teams for nearly forty years.
He was a bowler since working at Beverly Lanes as a teenager. He was most proud of his 823 series at 61 years of age and bowled his first of three 300 games at the age of 63. He continued bowling until Covid19. Frank was honored in the Niagara Falls Old-Timers Sports Hall of Fame in October 2005. He was a member of the American Legion Post 1162, Volare Lodge #269 and LaSalle High School Alumni and a previous member of the LaSalle Sportsman's Club.
Frank was an avid fisherman, spending many hours at Hyde Park and he was an avid hunter. He loved outdoors, loved wood carving, taxidermy, painting and gardening. Frank worked for over 30 years with the Niagara Frontier State Parks, retiring in March of 1995.
Frank met his wife Therese (Lucatra) Calovini in the summer of 1957 and they married on 6/10/1961 at St. John de LaSalle Church. He is survived by his wife and two children; Frank J. (Daune) of Parma, Ohio and his daughter, Carina T. (Jeffrey) Halpin of Grand Island, NY. He is survived by four grandchildren: Frank J. Calovini, Joseph F. Halpin, Emma T. Halpin and Reece P. Calovini, all of whom he cherished with all his heart.
Frank made some memorable friends along life's journey: Joe Occhipinti who spent 82 years by his side, along with John Miller, Don Kinsley, Jack Zappendorf and Marty Slish all of whom predeceased him.
He also leaves behind his in-laws, Louis (Bev) Lucatra, Lynda (Tom) Ciechoski, Dawn (Robert) Carr along with many nieces and nephews and his first cousins and their families: Jerry Turri, Lee Turri, Michael Reitmeyer, Judy Reitmeyer Aiden and Daniel Petruncio and his good friend, Harry Jones .
Frank was a parishioner of St. John de LaSalle Church. Frank was a good man and an modest man. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. We will miss him dearly.
A special thank you to Dr. Frank Laurri who treated Frank for many, many years and the staff of Niagara Hospice for making his last days comfortable.
Visitation will be held Saturday from 1-4 PM in the LANE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 8622 Buffalo Avenue, Niagara Falls, where Deacon David Slish will conduct services at 4 PM. Interment will be private.
