Ruth's Story

Text size

Ruth Helen (Truesdell) Van Horn, a longtime resident of Niagara Falls, died on Friday, May 5, 2017 in Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence. She was 97. She was born in Niagara Falls on November 10, 1919, the daughter of the late Bert J. and Inez M. (Handy) Truesdell. She grew up at the family home in Ransomville.
A very active woman, she was a former member of Hyde Park Presbyterian Church and Pierce Avenue Presbyterian Church, where she served on various church committees and boards. She was an active member of the LaSalle Yacht Club and the American Business Women's Association.
She was a devoted family person, cherishing the time spent with her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. The family fondly remembers the weekly Sunday after-church meals she prepared with love and kindness. It was a special time of gathering and catching up on the weeks events. In her home of 72 years, she had many dear friends and neighbors. She enjoyed her gardening at home, walking her dogs around Hyde Park and reading.
She worked for Don Allen Chevrolet and Massaro Chevrolet. In 1980, she retired from the office of John W. Owen, DDS as his receptionist.
Survivors include her daughter, Phyllis Galley of Niagara Falls; her son-in-law, Don Frost of Arkansas; grandchildren, Cheryl, Debbie, Lynn, Nancy, Jim, Susan, Mark, David, Eric and Denise; 21 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Van Horn; daughter, Patricia Frost; brother, Ralph Truesdell; and sister-in-law, Beatrice Truesdell.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to her long time physician, Ronald Clarke, MD and his staff; the fifth floor staff at Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Our Lady of Peace and Niagara Hospice.
Private graveside services will be held for the family in June with the Rev. Dr. Lee Holliday officiating. The interment will be in North Ridge Cemetery, Cambria.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Niagara County SPCA.
