Ozie's Story

Ozie Gibbs of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away on Sunday, July 31, 2016 at his home with his faithful companion and caregiver, Shirley Burnette. He was born on April 24, 1931 in Camden, NC, to the late Rev. Tom and Gladys [Saunders] Gibbs.
Mr. Gibbs graduated from P.W. Moore High School in 1949. He enlisted in the Army in 1950 and served during the Korean War. He received the Korean Service Medal, Bronze Star (three), Combat Infantry Badge and Distinguished ED Unit Emblem. He was employed as a Pipefitter at Harrison Radiator for 39 years.
He is survived by two daughters, Wanda Gibbs Sumler and Susan Taylor Wilson; one son, Randy Wright; honorary sons, Kenny Myles and Perry Burnette; 17 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was the father of the late Ozette Gibbs Strickland and Bryan Wright.
Viewing will be held on Saturday from 10-11 AM with funeral services at 11 AM, at Corner Stone Missionary Baptist Church Chapel, 508 South Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC. Interment will be at Old Oak Grove Cemetery,Elizabeth City, NC.
