Martha Switzer, longtime resident of Grand Island, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 24, 2016. She was 88. She was born in Niagara Falls on May 31, 1927, the daughter of William and Catherine (McLean) Johnstone. Martha attended local schools and graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1945.
She graduated from Niagara University, as one of only 8 women in her class of 1949. After graduating, she taught 2nd grade for Niagara Falls Public Schools for two years before beginning her most cherished job of raising her children. She volunteered for numerous organizations but especially enjoyed her work at Head Start, Memorial Hospital and Sidway School. She was a member of the LaSalle Literary Club, Hyde Park Garden Club and Grand Island Historical Society where she served as a docent. She enjoyed crafts, sewing and was known for her beautiful quilts that were hand sewn and quilted. Martha loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, especially at her cottage in Canada.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Switzer in 2013. They were married for 63 years at the time of his death. She is survived by her son, Ron (Laura) Switzer of Danbury, CT; a daughter, Jane Switzer, Powell, OH; a daughter-in-law, Rosemary Switzer of Webster, NY; five grandchildren, Ed, Samantha, Vicki, Greg and Lauren Switzer; sisters-in-law, Joyce Switzer and Sandy Rueter and brother-in-law, Paul Beatty. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her beloved son, Robert (Rosemary) Switzer and siblings, Jack Johnstone and Mary Biggs.
Friends may call on Friday from 4-7 PM at the LANE FUNERAL HOME, INC, 8622 Buffalo Avenue, Niagara Falls. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 AM at St. Martin-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church, 2587 Baseline Road, Grand Island. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Riverdale Cemetery in the Town of Lewiston. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Martin-in-the-Fields or the American Heart Association.
