Leo's Story

Leo L. Toarmino, 76, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away on December 12, 2016 at Mt. St. Mary's Hospital. Born in Niagara Falls, NY, he was the son of the late Rosario 'Ross' and Gertrude (Zito) Toarmino.
Leo was a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls and attended local schools. He later attended SUNY at Geneseo where he earned a Bachelor's degree in photography. He served as a Corporal in the United States Army and was honorably discharged on April 11, 1963. Leo worked on the New York State Power Project as an iron worker and welder. Afterwards he was employed at Chisholm Ryder and later Airco Speer until his retirement.
Leo was an avid photographer and videography, and served as president of the WNY Photography Association. Among the highlights of his work was doing the photos for the Annual Fireman's Toys for Tots. Leo's other interests were making furniture, building and flying model RC airplanes and reading. He also enjoyed traveling, especially to New York City for Yankee games, Walt Disney World and Gettysburg. Above all, Leo will most be remembered as a loving and devoted husband and father. He was an amazing grandfather known as 'Papa Leo,' who loved attending and supporting his grandchildren's sporting events.
Leo is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Ruth (Wheeler) Toarmino; one daughter, Diana (Lawrence) Vilardo; and was predeceased by one daughter, Amy Lee Bernadette Toarmino; and grandson, David Anthony. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Salvatore L. Vilardo, Marco Leo Vilardo and Angelo J. Vilardo; four siblings, John (late Charlene) Toarmino, Jenny (late Larry) Griffin, Samuel (Patty) Toarmino and Ann (Peter) Stinis; several godchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins; and was the brother-in-law of Charles and Emma Wheeler, Ruby Wheeler, Joanne Wheeler, Linda and Dan Lococo and Mary Toarmino. He was also predeceased by his brothers and sisters, Joseph Toarmino, Peter Toarmino, Ross Toarmino, Charles Toarmino, Margaret (late Aldo) Sepe, Rosie Harvey, Anthony DeFranco and Joanne Remple.
Visitation will be on Sunday from 1 - 5 PM at the M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10 AM at St. Vincent De Paul at St. Leo's Church, 2748 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY. EVERYONE PLEASE ASSEMBLE AT CHURCH. Interment with Military Honors in Memorial Park Cemetery.
