Leo's Story

Leo J. Nowicki, 92, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away on Sunday, March 26, 2017. Born in Niagara Falls, NY on June 25, 1924 he was the son of the late Walter and Julia (Kucryuska) Nowicki, attended local schools and graduated from Niagara Falls High School. He entered the United States Army on March 18, 1943, serving as a radio operator in the Ardennes, Central Europe, Northern France and Rhineland, with the 39th Signal Company/Yankee Division "YD" during WW II. He was honorably discharged as a Technical Sergeant on January 8, 1946. Receiving the American Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal for his service to his country.
After serving his country, Leo married the former, Charlotte Wozniak on February 8, 1948 at Our Lady of the Rosary Church. They we're married for 57 years, until her passing in 2005. Leo enjoyed being a "ham" radio operator in his spare time and worked as an Electrical Engineer at Sierra Research until his retirement.
He was an avid stamp collector, belonging to the Buffalo Stamp Club for nearly 40 years. Leo was also a member of St. Vincent DePaul Parish (former Prince of Peace), where he was an usher for many years. The family would like to say Thank You to the staff of the 1st floor at Schoellkopf Health Center, for the compassionate and loving care Leo received.
He is survived by his daughters, Suzanne (Mark) Czyz of North Carolina, Barbara (Patrick) Kerins; a niece and a nephew. Besides his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his brother, Edwin Nowicki. Special thanks to his friends, Richard Geltz and Diana (late Richard) Butera for their support and friendship.
Friends may call on Wednesday, March 29th from 6-8 PM at ZAJAC FUNERAL HOME INC., 319-24th Street, cor. of Welch Ave., Niagara Falls, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 AM on Thursday, March 30th at St. Vincent DePaul (Prince of Peace), 1055 North Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY with Rev. Stewart Lindsay officiating. EVERYONE PLEASE ASSEMBLE AT CHURCH. Burial with military honors following in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Lewiston, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to charity of one's choice.
