Homan L.'s Story

Homan L. 'John' Rairie, 73, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at Elderwood Health Care at Grand Island. Born in Niagara Falls, NY on January 22, 1943, he was the son of the late Clifford Rairie and Ruth (London) Barnes. Homan was a lifelong military man.
He entered the United States Marine Corps, July 31, 1964 serving during the Vietnam War where he met and eventually married the love of his life Medelina Otero. After being honorably discharged from the US Marines as SSGT on December 16, 1973, Homan entered the United States Navy on February 27, 1974. Serving until his honorable discharge as AT1 on September 30, 1985.
During his 21 years of service to his country, he received the Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal, Vietnamese Cross Of Gallantry, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal W/2*, Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnam Campaign Medal(1960-), RVN Service Medal, Rifle Marksmanship Badge, RVN Campaign Medal, Navy Expeditionary Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, .38 Cal Pistol/Battle "E" Award and the 2nd Good Conduct Medal For Period Ending 84DEC29.
He was a founding member of the Lt. John Paul Bobo Detachment, as well as a member of the John J. Welch Post 381, and Honeoye-Hemlock Post 1278.
Besides his wife he is survived by his children, Crystal and Joseph Rairie; siblings, Ruth M. Thompson, Sharon Lascelle, William I. Barnes and Jimmie L. Barnes. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Bessie Lewis.
Friends may call on Wednesday, January 18th from 3-7 PM at ZAJAC FUNERAL HOME, INC., 319-24th Street, cor. of Welch Ave., Niagara Falls, NY, where funeral services with Military Honors will follow at 7:00 PM. Burial will be in Bath National Cemetery at a later date.
