Gina (Fabretti)'s Story
Gina (Fabretti) Chilberg, 89, of Youngstown, NY, passed away peacefully Monday, April 10, 2017 in Schoellkopf Health Care Center under the care of Niagara Hospice. She was born in Bassano di Sutri, Italy on July 30, 1927 to the late Giuseppina (Pellegrini) and Giuseppe Fabretti.
At the end of WW II, on September 22, 1946, Gina married Robert W. Chilberg, Sr. in Rome, Italy. They settled in Scottville, MI, until relocating to Niagara Falls in 1948, where they followed Gina's childhood friend Marisa Burns, also a war bride, to the growing Italian community of Niagara Falls.
Gina worked as a seamstress and retired from the housekeeping department of Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center in 1988. That same year Gina and Robert retired to their lake home in Youngstown. Together they were founding members of Our Lady of Fatima Shrine. Gina was an avid gardener, an amazing seamstress, loved to play cards and could tell a joke like no one else. She will be remembered for her dynamic personality, generous heart, as well as being a fabulous self taught cook. There was always an extra seat at her table so no one would be left out. Gina leaves us with a lifetime example of resilience, resourcefulness and empathy and will forever be 'Nanni' to her grandchildren.
She is survived by two sons, Joseph (Janet) Chilberg, Mark (Cynthia) Chilberg; a daughter, Louise (Dino) DiRienzo; 13 grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one sister, Mirella Bellori of Rome, Italy; and many loving nieces and nephews. Mrs. Chilberg was predeceased by her husband, the late Robert W. Chilberg, Sr.; her son, the late Robert W. Chilberg, Jr.; and two siblings, the late Adorno Fabretti and Anuziata 'Tina' Nemia.
There will be no prior visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, April 17, 2017 at 10:00 AM at Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Joseph Parish at St. Joseph Church, 1413 Pine Avenue, Niagara Falls. Entombment in St. Joseph Cemetery, Niagara Falls, NY. Family and friends invited.
Flowers gratefully declined. If desired, memorials may be made in Gina's memory to Schoellkopf Health Center Activities Department or Niagara Hospice.
