Geraldine 'Geri''s Story
Geraldine (Polizzi) Mondi of Grand Island, NY, formerly of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away on June 7, 2017 in Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. Born on May 10, 1950, she was the daughter of the late Gerald C. and Evelyn (Villella) Polizzi.
She was a graduate of Niagara Falls High School and attended Niagara County Community College majoring in business management. Before her retirement, she was a Legislative Secretary to the Niagara Falls City Council since April 1, 2002. Previously, she was also the Staff Contact for the Niagara Falls Human Rights Commission and Secretary to the Niagara Falls Tourism Advisory Board. She was the past Director of member Services for the Pine Avenue Business Association, and worked for the NYS Senate as the Niagara Falls District office Director for former New York State Senator's, Anthony R. Nanula and Alfred T. Coppola.
On February 7, 1970, she married her childhood sweetheart, Anthony 'Tony' Mondi in Our Lady of Lebanon Church. All seven of her sisters were bridesmaids. She was a past member and volunteer for several organizations including the; Niagara Falls City Democratic Committee, past member of the New York State Democratic Committee, past member of the Business and Professional Women of Niagara, past member of the Niagara Gazette Advisory Board, and along with her husband Tony, were active volunteers for the Niagara Falls Firefighters Christmas Toy Fund Telethon. They also volunteered for the Lords Day Dinner, serving Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter dinners to the needy of the Niagara area.
In 1996, she received the "Employee of the Year" award from the Pine Avenue Business Association. In 1997, she was named "Women of the Year" by the Business and Professional Women of Niagara, and in October of that year, she received the "Good Neighbor Award" from TOPS and WHLD Radio. In 1998, she received the "Outstanding Service Award" from the Niagara Falls Block Club Council and in 1999, Geri and her husband received the Niagara Falls Firefighters Christmas Toy Fund Award for their 20 years of service to the telethon.
In addition to her beloved husband of 47 years, she is survived by her two children, Christina (James, Jr.) Hymiak of Tampa, FL and Anthony Mondi, Jr. of Grand Island, NY; two grandsons, Austin James Hymiak and Jared Anthony Hymiak both of Tampa, FL. The oldest of 10 children, Geraldine is also survived by her seven sisters, Annette (Lawrence Pacifico, Jr.) Polizzi, Cynthia Polizzi, both of Tampa, FL, MaryAnn (Randy) Powell of Saratoga Springs, NY, Susan (late David) Honadle of Virginia Beach, VA, Theresa (Jeff) Nation, Patty Polizzi, and Loretta Polizzi, all of Denver, CO; one brother, Manny (Elaine) Polizzi of Tampa, FL, and was predeceased by a brother, Frank Polizzi. Geraldine was the sister-in-law of Adele (Guy) Rivett and late Rosemary Mondi; granddaughter of the late Emmanual (Delia) Polizzi and Frank (Mildred) Villella. She is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
There will be no prior visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, June 22nd at 10:00 AM at St. Stephen's RC Church, 2100 Baseline Road, Grand Island, NY. If desired, memorial offerings would graciously be accepted in Geraldine's memory to the Niagara Falls Firefighters Toy Fund, PO Box 69, Niagara Falls, NY 14302. Arrangements by M.J.
