Edward's Story

Edward J. Grochala, 90 years old, passed away on July 17, 2016 at Mt. St. Mary's Hospital. He was born in Niagara Falls on October 12, 1925 the son of the late John and Mary (Smiszek) Grochala.
Mr. Grochala attended Holy Trinity Parochial School and Niagara Falls High School. He served with the United States Navy from January 29, 1944 until his honorable discharge on February 3, 1946. He was a Purple Heart recipient and was also awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the American Theatre Medal, the Philippines Liberation Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal.
He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier for 40 years and retired in 1979. He played football for Niagara Falls High School and St. Mary's High School and softball for the industrial league and Muny league. He was a former member of the American Legion Portage Post #1465 and was a member of the National Association of Retired Letter Carriers representing retirees for 20 years. He was also a part-time employee of the Niagara Falls Recreation Department for 20 years. He was a compassionate man who was always willing to help his relatives, friends and the less fortunate in any way he could.
Mr. Grochala was predeceased by his wife, Irene (Pinkowski) Grochala, on May 27, 2015. He is survived by his daughters, Linda (Angelo) Sarkees of Lewiston, Janice (Dennis) Hilliard, Karen (Paul Stumpf) Centofanti and Mary Grochala, all of Niagara Falls. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Wilhemina Narkiewicz. He was predeceased by his sons, Edward M. Grochala and Paul E. Grochala; his brother, Theodore Grochala; and his sister, Lottie Mamon.
THERE IS NO PRIOR VISITATION. Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday at 10:00 AM at St. John DeLaSalle Church, 8477 Buffalo Avenue with Rev. Slawomir Siok officiating. Private interment in Holy Trinity Cemetery. ARRANGEMENTS ENTRUSTED TO THE LABUDA FUNERAL HOME, INC.
