“The Commish”

Donald E. ''The Commish'' Sweeney 84, of Niagara Falls, NY passed away on Wednesday, March 23, 2016, unexpectedly, surrounded by his family. Born in Niagara Falls, NY on November 30, 1931 he was the son of the late Bert and Anne (Schulteis) Sweeney and attended local schools. He entered the United States Army on July 18, 1952 serving during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on June 17, 1954 as a CPL (T). For his service to his country he received the Korean Service Medal W/2bronze Service Stars, National Defense Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal.
After serving his country Donald married Gladys (Johnson) on August 31, 1957 at Our Lady of the Rosary Church. They were married for 54 years until her passing in 2011. The Commish worked as a Fireman for 30 years with the Niagara Falls Fire Department until his retirement 1993 as a Fire Inspector. In his younger years he loved golfing and attending Notre Dame Football games. But most of all, he loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by his daughters, de Anne (Lance ) Gornbein, Mary (Vic) Russo and Bridget (Mark) DiFrancesco; sons, Peter (Wendy) Sweeney, Mickey (Lisa) Sweeney and Daniel(Molly) Sweeney; grandchildren, Benjamin, Brittany, Timothy, Megan, Madeline, Johnathan, Ashley(Ali), Anthony and Keirstin. Also survived by one expected great-grandchild Noah. Besides his wife and parents he was predeceased by his daughter, Beth Suzanne Sweeney, brother, John (Donna) Sweeney and sister, Mary (Fred) Jaworski.
"SHOWTIME" will be Tuesday, March 29th from 3-8 PM at ZAJAC FUNERAL HOME INC., 319 24th Street, core of Welch Ave, Niagara Falls, NY, where prayers will begin at 9:30 AM on Wednesday, March 30th. Followed by a Mass of Christian burial 10:00 AM at Divine Mercy Parish, 2437 Niagara Street, Niagara Falls, NY with Rev. Jerry Bartko officiating. Entombment with Military Honors following in Gate of Heaven Mausoleum, Lewiston, NY.
