David "Pop Pop"'s Story
David Earl “Pop Pop” Banks, Sr., a longtime resident of the area, passed away Saturday, March 26, 2016 in Strongsville, Ohio. He was 83. He was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania on January 14, 1933, the son of the late Clarence and Margaret (McMinn) Banks. He attended Pennsylvania schools and was a graduate of Altoona High School and worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad. He moved to Niagara Falls in 1945.
After moving to this area, he was employed by Model City; Olin Matheson, the Carborundum Company and retired from Washington Mills in 2006. He was a member of Colonial Heights Free Methodist Church and frequently attended the Forestview Church of God.
As a younger man, he was very active playing fast pitch softball for the Niagara Falls Church League and the Carborundum Company. As he had his children and later, grandchildren he loved to attend all of their sporting events. He was a former member with his late wife of the National Campers and Hikers Association; enjoyed hand painting ceramics with her and anything train associated.
He was predeceased by his wife Edith (Maines) Banks. Survivors include two children, David E. (Linda) Banks, Jr. of Seattle, WA and Dan L. (Wendy) Banks of New Brighton, PA; grandchildren, Chris, Joel, Hannah, Rachel, Krystle, Meghan and Jakob and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held Thursday. March 31 at 12 Noon in Riverdale Cemetery, 5605 Lewiston Road, Lewiston. Friends may call on Sunday April 17, 2016 in the LANE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 8622 Buffalo Avenue, Niagara Falls, where the Rev. Ronald Maines will conduct services at 3 PM.
