Charles A. West, Sr., of Niagara Falls, died on Sunday, April 9, 2017 in the Town of Ellicottville as the result of tragic automobile accident on Route 219, when a car crossed the line and hit him head on. In the car with him was his beloved Shih Tzu, Linda, who also died as a result of the accident. They were heading back home to Niagara Falls. He was 89. He was born in De Lancey, Pennsylvania on June 14, 1927, a son of William and Sarah (Manto) West.
Mr. West was a World War II Navy Veteran, serving aboard the USS Snyder and the USS Edsall. He was honorably discharged in August of 1946 as Seaman First Class. On September 25, 1954, he married the former Rose M. Verdill, who survives him.
Charles had a long career with the Laborers Local 91, retiring as a labor boss in 1991. Following his retirement, he and his wife purchased a vacation home in Great Valley, NY. As a family, they have many fond memories of times spent at their vacation home. An outdoorsman, Charles was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved ice fishing on Lake Simcoe and Lake Erie. He cherished the time spent with his devoted wife, Rose. They especially liked cooking together. He was a member of Holy Family Parish of Jesus, Mary and Joseph.
In addition to his wife of 62 years, Rose M. West, he is survived by his two sons, Charles 'Chaz' West, Jr. of Niagara Falls and Donald West (Deby) of Grand Island. He was predeceased by several siblings.
Friends may call Thursday from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM in the Lane Funeral Home, INC., 8622 Buffalo Avenue, Niagara Falls, where services will follow the visitation at 9 PM. The entombment will be private at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
