Carl J. Amato, Sr., 85, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence in Lewiston, NY. Born in Niagara Falls, NY, he was the son of the late Joseph and Calogera 'Katie' (Farinella) Amato.
Carl attended local schools and graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1949. During the Korean War he served in the U.S. Marine Corp from November 20, 1951 until his honorable discharge on November 3, 1953. He continued serving in the U.S. Marine Corp Reserve until November 1959. On October 5, 1957 he married Louise (Shaghoian) Amato at St. Joseph Church in Niagara Falls. Mrs. Amato predeceased him on May 21, 2001.
Carl was employed as a rocket technician at Bell Aerospace in the Town of Wheatfield. He then worked for many years as a body shop manager at various local collision shops and in 1981 he opened Carl Amato Collision which is still owned and operated by his son Michael.
In his leisure time, Carl enjoyed building model airplanes but his greatest joy was spending time with his family. Carl was lovingly known as 'Pops' and will be remembered for his generosity to his family and friends whenever needed.
Carl is survived by five sons, Michael (Geraldine) Amato, David (Kathy) Amato, Gary (Lisa) Amato, Carl J. Amato, Jr. and Randy (fiancee Jackie Printup) Amato; 10 grandchildren, Michael (Katie) Amato, Julie Amato, Nicole (Jason) Brandt, Lynn (Jason) Azar, Alexa Amato, Jennifer Amato, Andrew Husted, Brooke Amato, Anthony Amato and Aurora Printup; four great-granddaughters, Nyah, Reece, Ava and Annie; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by five siblings, John (late Fannie) Amato, Fritz (late Mary) Amato, Grace (late Bob Simone) (late Ivan) Burton, Charles (late Martha) Amato and Salvatore (Rose) Amato.
Visitation will be on Saturday morning, November 26th from 9 AM to 12 noon at the M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY, followed by a funeral service at 12 noon. Interment with Military Honors in St. Joseph Cemetery.
