Bernice (Kubik)'s Story
Bernice (Kubik) Witkowski, age 67, passed in the early hours of June 14, 2017 in her home in New Carrollton, MD, surrounded by her loved ones after a prolonged battle with cancer. Bernice became a registered nurse in 1971, graduating from Niagara University School of Nursing. For over 40 years, she dedicated her life to all the children in her care, in hospitals, private practices and, over the last 16 years, with Prince George's County Schools.
A beloved member of her community, Bernice was frequently called upon to be the "nurse of the neighborhood." All her family and friends came to her for medical advice, and knew they could rely on her to be a support in any way she could. She also took an active role in her church, acting as a lay minister at St. Bernard's in Riverdale, MD.
In her spare time, she could frequently be found in her garden, which she cultivated with love and care for many years. She was known for her kind, loving heart, and considered everyone family. She was preceded by her husband of 41 years, Edward in 2012, and is survived by her daughter, Jennifer (Roy) Herb; her sister, Christine (Robert) Belkota; as well as her "adopted daughters," Patricia Holland, Kellie (Rilla) MacKinnon, and Gretchen Segarra.
Friends may call on Thursday from 7 until 9 PM at the LABUDA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 356 Portage Road. Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service at Holy Trinity Cemetery, Lewiston, on Friday at 10:30 AM where Bernice will be interred next to her dear husband, Edward. Rev. Jacek P. Mazur will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, Johns Hopkins Hospital or St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
