Theodore S. Viele, 78, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away on January 17, 2018. Born in Niagara Falls, NY, he was the son of the late Rufus and Edna (Speicher) Viele.
Ted was a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls. He attended local schools and graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1957. He served in the National Guard and United States Army Reserve from 1957 until his honorable discharge in 1965. Afterwards, Ted received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Springfield College in Massachusetts. He began his career as a substitute teacher working in the Niagara Wheatfield, Lewiston-Porter and Starpoint school districts. He went on to become an employment counselor for the State of New York Office of Employment until his retirement after nineteen years of service.
Ted was a member of the Niagara Falls YMCA for over fifty years where he also served as a member of their board of directors. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 1465. Ted was an outstanding tennis player receiving numerous accolades for single and doubles play locally as well as in Canada. He also competed in the New York State Empire games winning a silver medal in the senior division. Ted was a passionate outdoorsman who especially loved hunting, fishing and spending time at his family's cottage in Turkey Point, Canada.
In addition to his parents, Ted was predeceased by his brother, Dr. John S. Viele. He is survived by several cousins and many dear friends.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 24th from 3-7 PM at the M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY where funeral services will conclude at 7:00 PM.
