Sister Celestine's Story

Sister Celestine Fruscione OSF, the former Grace Elizabeth Fruscione died in Anapolis, Brazil on January 18, 2018. She was born March 15, 1925 in Niagara Falls, NY, the daughter of Salvatore and Bellonia Saia Fruscione.
Grace attended St. Joseph's Grade School and graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1942. She was received into the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, NY in 1946 and professed her final religious vows on August 16, 1953. Sister Celestine faithfully lived the Mission of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany for over 73 years and almost 69 years as a Missionary in Brazil.
Sister Celestine was committed to developing the intellect of youth, but mainly the teachings of our Lord. She was Mistress of Postulants, Director of Novices, Treasurer of the Region and Area Coordinator of Brazil. Together with the Franciscan Friars of the Province of the Most Holy Name of Jesus of Brazil, Sister Celestine toured the missions of Brazil where she served for many years.
Sister Celestine remained in Brazil from retirement until the time of her death. Sister treated all those she met with dignity. Her heart was open to everyone, young or old, rich or poor, a tiny quiet woman with a huge heart, a Franciscan to the core.
She was predeceased by her parents, brothers Samuel and Joseph; sisters Rose Tato, Lucy Ottaviani, Clara Gaeta and nephew Richard Tato.
She is survived by nieces Virginia (late Michael) DeLuca, Cynthia (late John) Luzak, Karen (Conrad) Johnson, Judith (Joseph) Hilty, Bella (John) Ryan, Annabella (Richard) Goodman, Roseanna (Mark) Brophy, Paulette Gaeta, Mary Ann (Philip) Mohr, Christine (Larry) Edwards and nephews Richard (Pina) Fruscione, Anthony (Marie) Gaeta, Alfred (Ellen) Gaeta, and several great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Sister Celestine was greatly loved and respected by all who knew her.
A Memorial Mass was celebrated in the Chapel at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, Allegany, NY on Wednesday, January 24, 2018. The family has planned a Memorial Mass for Saturday April 14, 11:00 a.m. St. Vincent DePaul Parish (St. Leo's location) 2748 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY.
