Sarah's Story

Text size

On a sunny afternoon, July 27, 2017, Sarah R. (Graci) Marra, turned her beautiful face toward God and His Angels carried her into heaven. It's so hard to let go, but we are so grateful we had her with us for so many healthy years. Her journey ended peacefully, at Niagara Hospice House, surrounded by her loving family. She was 92 years old.
Sarah was the daughter of the late Salvatore Graci & Grace (Milazzo) Graci, both of Palermo, Sicily. She was born on February 17, 1925 in Pittston, Pennsylvania and was one of 10 children.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Dr. Peter J. Marra, who was a prominent dentist in Western New York. They married on January 24, 1942 at St. Rocco's Roman Catholic Church in Pittston, PA. They were married for 64 years and were blessed to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on a cruise with all of their children and grandchildren. During their first 12 years of marriage they lived in Niagara Falls and then moved to Lewiston, where they raised their family.
Sarah was the quintessential mother, grandmother and great grandmother to her four daughters, nine grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. Her life was focused on her husband and her girls. She did it all. A terrific cook, she made holidays nothing but extraordinary. "Mama" as she was affectionately called by her grandchildren, prepared and hosted the entire extended family. She taught us about our roots and the value of family. She was our quiet foundation, a virtue of patience. No matter what was going on in each of our lives, she was our safe place, always there to offer words of encouragement. Not a Sunday passed when we were not at Mama's house for our traditional sauce and meatball dinner.
Aside from spending time with her family, she was a talented women. A seamstress, she kept her girls meticulously dressed. Sarah loved to sing and dance and as a young girl was often asked to sing at family weddings. She taught us the spirit of song, singing her grandbabies to sleep with her Italian lullabies. She was a sports fan, loved to watch Sunday football with her family. Sarah was also an avid golfer and a member of the St. Peter's bowling team. She enjoyed solving word puzzles, playing bingo, and cards with her husband and grandchildren on Friday nights. Sarah was a women of profound faith and a member of St. Peters RC church in Lewiston.
In her later years she found joy in watching her 17 great grandchildren grow. She would attend their school concerts, baseball and soccer games and would watch them swim and play at family parties.
Above all, she loved her family and being a part of their special moments. "There is nothing that can equal the treasure of so many shared memories"...and that was her gift to us.
She was also predeceased by her loving 8 brothers and sisters and their spouses, Pasquelina Noto, Samuel Graci, Charles Graci , Carmela Guzzi, Angelo Graci, Vincent Graci, Louis Graci, and Josephine DeFalco. She is survived by her youngest sister, Grace Lupas.
She is cherished and will be sadly missed by her loving daughters, Maria M.(Anthony P.) Aversa, of Lewiston, Gracelyn M. (Dr. A.J.) Bax, of Lewiston, Sandra M. (Dr. Frank P.) Altieri, of Florida, Deborah Marra, of Lewiston.
In addition to her children, she leaves behind her loving son in law, Richard Muto, her 9 loving grandchildren, Anthony Peter Aversa (Tiana), Tina Lombardo (Rene), Alfonso Marra Bax (Jennifer), Dr. Sarina Bax De Biaso (Mario), Dr. Graci Marra Bax Granata (Mario), Lana Altieri Sovie (Gerald), Sarah Christina Sarich (Jonathan), Richard Marra Muto, Lindsay Marra Muto, 17 adoring great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, August 3rd at 11:00 A.M. at St Peter's Church, 620 Center Street, Lewiston, NY. Entombment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
