Loretta Wasley Shattuck, age 98, passed away on January 16, 2018 in Bertrand Chaffee Hospital in Springville, NY. She was born in 1919 in Niagara Falls, sixth child of Thomas Wasley and Mary Ann Chesterfield Wasley. Loretta married Keith W. Shattuck of Hamlet and Niagara Falls in 1942 and they had four children, Linda, Cathy, Dean, and Beth. There were seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Loretta survived her husband, Keith, who passed away in 1990; daughters, Linda and Cathy; and grandson, Tyler.
Loretta was a legal secretary and a corporate secretary before her marriage. She and Keith lived in several places in Western New York, including Niagara Falls, Pekin, Williamsville, Lakewood, and Grand Island before retiring to Bemus Point. Later she moved back to Lakewood and then East Otto.
Loretta enjoyed many sewing, needlework, craft, and home decorating activities. She taught many of these at County Home Bureaus and Women's Clubs. She continued to create keepsakes and heirlooms for family and others into her nineties. Loretta was an avid card player and bridge was her favorite. She belonged to several groups in Lakewood and Jamestown. Her sports were golf and bowling and she participated in several leagues throughout the years. Wherever she lived she gardened as well.
Loretta loved her social life, friends, and entertaining. Guests were always welcomed and well-fed. She had a quick wit and enjoyed playing pranks on family and friends. She felt fortunate in her life, starting as a poor city kid in the Depression and ending up comfortable and able to provide for the family. She was a proud woman and truly believed that she had a good life. She will be missed.
