Julia's Story

Text size

Julia Anne Rotella (born Guiditta Cabello), of Lewiston, passed away on August 19, 2017 with the loving care and support of Niagara Hospice, following her long good-bye through Alzheimer's. Julia was born in Niagara Falls, NY, on April 26, 1927, the daughter of Luigi and Maria Guiseppa Cabello.
She was predeceased by her husband, Armando 'Amy' Rotella; three brothers, Jesse Cabello, Frank Cabello, and Angelino Cabello; and four sisters, Mary Tavano, Edith Nicoletti, Esther Bax, and Irma Chiodo.
Julia grew up on 18th Street in Niagara Falls, the eighth child of Italian immigrants. After she met Amy Rotella, a handsome Navy machinist, upon his return from World War II, the couple married on May 29, 1948, and were married for 49 years until his passing. Together, they built a house in Lewiston in 1956, where Julia resided for the next 60 years.
A gifted singer and pianist, she earned a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education at SUNY College at Buffalo, and later a Master's degree in Library Science from the University of Buffalo. Julia spent her career as a school librarian for the School District of Niagara Wheatfield and helped promote so many children's love of books with her memorable reading voice.
Julia loved her family and was always there for her children, grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Her reluctance to spend money herself was matched only by her generosity to her family. She was known for her love of games, her finesse with the stock market, her gifted singing voice, her volunteer work for the elderly, her pizza and pizzelles, her red hair, and most of all, her sense of humor, tenacity and independent spirit. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Julia is survived by a daughter, Cathy D'Angelo, of Juno Beach, FL; two sons, Louis (Diane) Rotella of Ellicott City, MD, and James (Anne) Rotella of Lockport, NY; and a brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Madeline Fava of Niagara Falls. She leaves behind eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, August 24th at 10:00 AM at St. Raphael's Parish, 3840 Macklem Avenue, Niagara Falls. Entombment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Alzheimer's Association in Julia's name would be appreciated by the family.
