Joseph L. Pitts died peacefully at home in Niagara Falls, NY on Friday, July 28, 2017. He was 91 years old. Joseph was born on February 16, 1926 in Dozier, AL to the late James Houston and Pearl (King) Pitts.
A member of the Greatest Generation, Joseph enlisted in the United States Navy in September 1946. He served in the Pacific Theater as an armed guard escort for troop and supply ships primarily transiting through Guam, the Philippines and New Guinea. He was honorably discharged in July 1948 and returned home to Alabama. Several years later he married his high school sweetheart, Juanita Joyce Tanton, in September 1950.
In early 1951, Joseph and Juanita traveled north to Niagara Falls to join three of his brothers in the industrial boom of Western New York. Employed by the E.I. DuPont Company for 32 years, he retired in 1984 in his last position as Supervisor for the Sodium Department. After retirement, he devoted his time to his family and home and his church community. Joseph was a longtime member of the LaSalle Church of Christ and served as a former deacon for the worshiping congregation.
Joseph was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Juanita (Tanton) Pitts, in addition to his parents and four brothers and sisters, Selma Pitts, Cleo Pitts, Cleve Pitts, Grover Pitts, Velma Johnson, Quenell Worley and Irene Chance. Survivors include two sons, Timothy Pitts of Niagara Falls, NY and Ronald Pitts (Cheryl) of Edmund, OK; four grandchildren, Ryan Pitts (Chrystal) of San Antonio, TX, Joshua Pitts (Tristin) of Edmund, OK, Angela (Pitts) Smith (Tyler) of Piedmont, OK, and Jason Pitts (Candice) of Edmund, OK, seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at the LANE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 8622 Buffalo Avenue on Friday, August 4, 2017 during the hours of 5-7 PM. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at 11 AM with the evangelist Mark Dailey of the LaSalle Church of Christ officiating. Interment will be in Acacia Park Cemetery in Pendleton, NY. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
