Joseph's Story

Joseph L. LeGasse, Sr. of Youngstown, NY, passed away on Monday, May 30, 2016, at his home under the care of his family and Niagara Hospice. Joe was born in South Brewer, ME, on September 27, 1928, the son of the late Eugene A. and Anne (Bachelor) LeGasse.
He joined the United States Army at the age of 17 and served in World War II, the Korean War and during the Vietnam War. Joe was awarded Two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star along with many accolades for his service. He retired from active duty of 23 years at the rank of Sgt. First Class (E7). After retirement from the Army, he became a mail carrier for the USPS for twenty years, retiring in 1986. Joe could not sit still and continued to work as a driver for the senior citizens for the Village of Youngstown and Town of Porter. He enjoyed his time at the Youngstown Fireman Field Day, he loved Youngstown and it's people. Joe was also a charter member of the Whirlpool Park Little League. Most importantly he enjoyed time with his wife and family, as well as fond memories of the Jug.
He is survived by his wife, Susanne M. (Greene) LeGasse, they were married on April 16, 1955 at St. Teresa's Church; seven children, Joseph, Jr., Francis (Lynne), Anne, James, Patricia LeGasse, Eileen Carbone and Colleen (Michael) Palmeri; one sister, Rose Stewart; fourteen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Joe was the brother of three late brothers and seven late sisters.
His family will be present on Thursday from 4-8 PM at RHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 901 Cayuga Street, LEWISTON, NY. Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial in celebration of his life on Friday at 11:00 AM at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, 218 Hinman Street, Youngstown, NY, with Msgr. David G. LiPuma officiating, followed by military honors. Flowers are gratefully declined. Memorials may be made in his name to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport, NY 14094 or to VA Home Care, 3495 Bailey Ave., Buffalo, NY 14215. Entombment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston, NY.
