John Joseph Pileggi, born on July 2, 1920 in Trout Creek, Ontario, Canada, passed away on March 25, 2017 in Matthews, NC. He was loved and preceded in death by wife, Mary Vechiarella Pileggi; daughter, Joanne Pileggi; and son, Stephen Pileggi, all of Niagara Falls, NY. He is survived by his son, John Pileggi and daughter-in-law, Andrea Reed Pileggi of the Charlotte, NC area; his grandchildren, John Pileggi and wife, Patricia Barthel Pileggi of Niagara Falls, Paige and Christian Pileggi of the Charlotte area; as well as a great-granddaughter, Marisa Pileggi of Niagara Falls.
John served in the US Army during WWII under General Patton and was artillery support for the advancing troops during the Battle of the Bulge. After retiring from both American Terrazo Strip and Mount St. Mary's Hospital in Niagara Falls, John continued working alongside his son in the family construction business in Niagara Falls as a painter and paper hanger. His life was filled with fishing, reading his beloved western novels, and acting as the family patriarch to many nieces and nephews he loved.
John's final years were spent in the Carolina's with his son John and family. Most recently, he resided at the Carrington Place Nursing Home in Matthews North Carolina where he was lovingly and respectfully cared for by many staff, including Hospice & Palliative Care of Charlotte.
Visitation will be held at St Matthew's Catholic Church in Charlotte, NC on Tuesday from 10:00 to 11:00 AM, followed immediately by a Catholic Funeral Mass. An internment service and full military burial will take place at Gate of Heaven's Mausoleum outside of Niagara Falls on Thursday at 10:00 AM. He will be laid to rest alongside his beloved wife, daughter and son. The family is requesting that any donations be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Charlotte, 1420 East Seventh Street, Charlotte, NC 28204.
