John T. Martinez

John T. Martinez, 90, of Pinellas Park, FL, passed away in his home on Thursday, July 11, 2019. He was born on February 1, 1929 in Niagara Falls, NY. He was the son of the late John B. Martinez and Mary (Muniz) Conway. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Jean (Fortin) Martinez and step-son, Calvin Reynolds.
After graduating from local schools, John enlisted in the U.S. Navy. During the Korean War he served on the U.S.S. Charles S. Sperry as an Electrician.
After serving his country John was employed for over 30 years by U.A. Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 122 (22). For several years John taught Apprenticeship School for the Local.
In 1988 John and Jean retired to Florida. Here is where John became known as "Beer Can John," not for drinking the beer but for the amazing creatively detailed airplanes, golf carts, motorcycles, cars, trucks, trains, jukeboxes, wishing wells, etc., he handmade out of beer and pop cans. He enjoyed selling them for many years at the local flea market. He also enjoyed golfing, taking walks and stopping by the Fraternal Orders of Eagles for a beer or two.
John is survived by his daughters, Donna Timbs, Jacquelyn Martinez, Janice (Gordon) Anderson; brothers, Dan (Diane) Martinez and Dennis (Cheryl) Conway; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by sisters, Dolores Goodroe, Louise Prince, Rosa Martinez and brother, Tim Conway.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass for John and Jean on August 17, 2019, 12:00PM at St Peter's Episcopal Church, 140 Rainbow Blvd., Niagara Falls, NY.
