John's Story

Text size

John Cappello's remarkable life came to an end as he was called into eternal rest on November 13, 2017 in the presence of his family. John was born over 97 years ago in Platania, Italy to Julia and Vincent Cappello, who predeceased him.
He came to this country at the age of 17 to join his father. Shortly after becoming a US Citizen, John served his newly adopted country and served in the US Army in WWII and fought in many important battles including the Battle of the Bulge. Upon his return, he settled in Niagara Falls and continued his search of the American Dream. John met and married Margaret Dolly Cappello (nee Buccierio), his wife of 60 plus years, who predeceased him in 2009.
John loved and served his beloved Niagara Falls community his entire adult life. He was a devoted member of the Holy Family Church, Holy Name Society, a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus and founding member of Our Lady of Fatima Shrine. He was also a member of the Christofor Columbus Society, Moose Lodge, Power City Lodge, Niagara Falls Hyde Park Bocce League and Spallino Towers Seniors group. He was also served as the honorary Grandfather to generations of dancers in the Greater Niagara Ballet Company's yearly production of the Nutcracker. He was a very proud employee of the HANCI Senior Companion Program, which started after his retirement as an autobody repairman and lasted over 37 years, right up to a few months ago. John loved being able to assist and improve the quality of life to so many deserving seniors. John was the recipient of the Father Meade Award and the key to the City of Niagara Falls in recognition to his devotion to his church and his community. He was also a recipient of the Citidini Speciale Award.
Most importantly, John was a wonderful father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend who willingly sacrificed all that he had for his family.
John is survived by his children, Felicia (Frank) Pietrangeli, Vincent Cappello, Antonette (Peter) Carducci, John (Elizabeth) Cappello; grandchildren, Frank (Haley) Pietrangeli, Anthony (Marla) Pietrangeli, Lora (Steven) Ledford, Grace (Rob Walker) Carducci, Christian Carducci, Starlyn (Masato) Hirano, Chandler Hunt and Camille Cappello; nine great-grandchildren; nephews, Vincenzo (Elena) Cappello, Luigi (Amy) Cappello, Renato (Jodi) Cappello, Franco (Marguirite) Cappello, Alessandra Cappello, Francesca Cappello and their children; niece and angel, Marie (Finley) Cozzo.
John is also predeceased by his sister, Feliciana Cappello; brother, Luigi Cappello; infant son, John Michael Cappello; beautiful grandson, John Raymond Cappello; and the many other wonderful family members and friends he knew and loved over his long life.
John did not accumulate a tremendous amount of wealth in his lifetime, but he left this life a rich man, who gave and received love from so many. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends, but we will carry his memory and the love he gave us in our hearts forever.
Please join his family as we celebrate his life on Thursday from 2-8 PM at SPALLINO-AMIGONE FUNERAL HOME, 1300 Pine Ave., Niagara Falls, where the Knights of Columbus will conduct a prayer service at 5:30 PM. Family and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial from Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Parish at St. Joseph Church on Friday, November 17, 2017 at 12:30 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to HANCI Senior Companion Program.
