Harrison L.'s Story

Harrison L. Coppock passed away on May 31, 2017. He was born on January 29, 1928 in Shenandoah, Iowa, son of the late Homer and Ruth (Haake) Coppock. Harry moved to Niagara Falls in 1937 and attended LaSalle High School. He graduated from Washington Iowa High School in 1945. Harry was a veteran and served in the 11th Airborne Division in Sapporo, Japan. He was a graduate of Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa and received a Masters Degree from Buffalo State College. He also studied Russian at Canisius College and received a degree in Counseling from Niagara University.
Harry taught English at Lewiston Porter for 15 years and was a guidance counselor at Kenmore West High School for 18 years. For 17 summers, he also worked as a immigrant inspector.
Harry studied voice at the Eastman School of Music and with Heinz Rehfuss at the University of Buffalo. He was a soloist at many area churches including Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Buffalo, Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church in Buffalo, and Messiah Lutheran Church in Lewiston. He sang with the Cammerata Singers of Buffalo, Buffalo Schola Cantorum (Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus), and the Artpark Opera Chorus.
Harry served on the Lewiston Porter Board of Education including two years as President. He also served on the Lewiston Town Council, the Lewiston Zoning Board, and the Lewiston Republican Committee. Harry was a member of the Niagara Frontier Country Club and the Moose Lodge in Lewiston.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara, whom he married in 1962. His children, Gary, wife, Carleen, and their children, Sarah and Rachel of Pella, IA; Catharine Healy, her husband, Robert, and their children, Samantha, Kyle and Jesse of Pittsford, NY; and Carrie of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. A sister, Margaret C. Bowen of Jamesville, NY. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and their families. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by six siblings.
As Harry requested, no services are planned. His body was donated to University of Buffalo's Medical School. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lewiston Public Library, 308 South 8th Street, Lewiston, NY 14092.
