Genevieve's Story

Text size

Genevieve Carson, 93 years old, died peacefully at home on July 28, 2017 in the presence of her daughters and those she most loved. The youngest of four children, she was born in Niagara Falls on November 13, 1923 to the late Matthew and Catherine (Bacior) Niedzweicki.
She remembered her childhood as a time of happy and communal household labors according to the season - keeping chickens and a cow, tending the family's vegetable garden, cooking and canning, plucking chickens with her siblings to make pillows next to the cast iron stove.
She attended St. Stanislaus Kostka School where lessons were conducted in Polish, and earned an academic diploma at Niagara Falls High School. While she wished to attend college, this was an unattainable dream at the time. After graduation she worked at the M&T Bank on the corner of Portage and East Falls Streets where she met her husband, Stanley Carson; they were married in 1950. She and Stanley operated a commercial rental building at 826 Pine Avenue where they ran a third floor bowling alley for many years.
Genevieve was a lover of gardens, farms and the domestic arts. She was expert at flower and vegetable gardening. Once her children had grown she and Stanley learned the art of tree grafting and turned their yard into a small orchard of dwarf fruit trees - each containing several cultivars of the tree's fruit - along with various berry and grape species. Christmas cookies, apple pies and Polish meals were among her signature dishes.
Genevieve relocated to Miami in the late 1980's to help raise her grandchildren while her daughter, Linda, pursued a medical degree. During that time she was "Grandma" to many children: a stable and constant source of comfort and permanence while their mothers were at work.
Genevieve's last years were spent crocheting multicolored patchwork afghans for her friends and family, each of which is a work of art in which Genevieve's love is palpable.
She is survived by her two daughters, Linda Carson Keller (Gary) of Miami, FL and Maryanne Carson of New York, NY; a niece, Marilyn Majchrzak of Tucson, AZ; two grandchildren, Adam Keller of Brooklyn, NY and Anne Keller of Boston, MA along with many members of her adopted Miami family, all of whom called her "Grandma Gen". She was predeceased by her husband, Stanley R. Carson; sisters, Helen Adamczyk and Jessie Majchrzak; and her brother, Ted Niedzweicki.
Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, August 19th at 9:30 AM at Divine Mercy Parish, corner of Niagara and 24th Streets with Rev. Jacek P. Mazur officiating, followed by burial in Holy Trinity Cemetery.
