Freda Hymiak, 86 years young, passed away on Saturday, March 3, 2018 in Erie, PA, surrounded by her loving family.
Always eager to bring joy to the people she loved, her last days saw a rare weekend of sunshine and blue skies in the midst of a historic Erie winter. Freda will be remembered by all that knew her as a joyful person with such a zest for life that even complete strangers would often start a conversation with her.
One of five children, she was born in North Tonawanda on January 23, 1932, the daughter of the late Jacob and Lottie (Kacala) Gawrys. She attended Our Lady of Czestochowa Elementary School and graduated at the top of her class from North Tonawanda High School in 1950.
Freda married William "Bill" Hymiak on September 2, 1950, and moved to Niagara Falls where they celebrated 55 years of marriage. Their marriage was so full of love and inspiration that Freda and Bill's two children and granddaughter chose to be married in September for good luck.
Freda worked at the Globar Division of Carborundum and later retired from the Coated Abrasives Division. She was a member of the Echo Club, the Holy Trinity Seniors, the Raven Social Club and the Mercy Center for Seniors in Erie. Her interests included bingo, cards, gardening and spending time with her family. Freda moved to Erie, PA in February 2016 to live with her daughter, Carol, and son-in-law, Marc Bryant.
Freda was preceded in death by her husband, William; and her daughter, Janet Hymiak. She is survived by her daughter, Carol and husband, Marc; her son-in-law, Tom McNamee; grandchildren, Jamie Bryant, Caitlyn (Jeff) Burick, Brenna McNamee (fiance, Derek Chrisman) and Connor McNamee; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; as well as her dear friend, Nancy Pack and family. She was also predeceased by her brothers, Raymond and Marion Gawrys; and sisters, Florence Mazurowski and Frances Larwa.
Friends may call on Wednesday from 6-8 PM at the LABUDA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 356 Portage Road. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday at 10:00 AM at Divine Mercy Parish, corner of Niagara and 24th Streets with Rev. Jacek P. Mazur officiating. Entombment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
