Evy Magnusson Newlin

Events

Evy Magnusson Newlin, 92, was called Home on the morning of May 27. She was predeceased by her husband, Lyman Newlin. She is survived by her sons, Fred and Erik; many relatives, and countless friends whose lives she touched with her kindness and spirit.
A long-time resident of Lewiston, she moved there with her family in 1981. Born in Sweden, she immigrated to the USA by herself at the age of 22. She first lived in Chicago, where she worked as a dental assistant, a clerk at Texaco, spa manager of the prestigious Women's Athletic Club, and at the Swedish Consulate.
By any measure, Evy had a very full and adventurous life. Growing up on a small farm in Sweden with eight siblings, her days were full of family and nature. She cherished every day of her life, and always made the most of her time. Chasing her dreams was something she always embraced.
Upon immigrating to the US, she became a prize-winning marksman, avid hiker, equestrian, and mountain climber. One of her proudest accomplishments was being the only woman in her party to summit the Grand Tetons, outlasting many of her male teammates. Her ceaseless love for hiking even inspired her to walk several miles along the Bruce Trail near Tobermory at the age of 91. Her many interests included wildlife, painting, kayaking, photography, bird-watching, music, astronomy, skiing and cycling.
She loved Lewiston and was enthusiastic about bettering the community. She was a longtime volunteer for the HART program, and 20 years ago led the successful petition drive to construct a path along River Road, connecting Lewiston and Youngstown. She served as a voting inspector for Niagara County and the Village of Lewiston for many years. She participated regularly in the Lewiston Art Council's Artfest, winning several awards for her photographs and winning Best in Show for her delicious Queen's Jam.
Evy will be fondly remembered for her kindness, sense of humor, zest for life, and concern for people and animals. She passed these traits on to her sons Erik, who volunteered at the SPCA and studied at Cornell Veterinary College, and Fred, who served as the Town Supervisor of Lewiston.
A memorial service will be held at Lewiston's Lutheran Church of the Messiah, Saturday June 29th, at 10:30 AM. All are welcome.

Fred, My deepest sympathies to you and your family for your great loss. Your Mom's life of adventure and accomplishment was beautiful to read and I wish I could have known her. It is never easy to lose a loved one but even harder when they are truly special.

Wish I'd had a chance to know your Mother better. We all need an inspiring person, like your Mother, in our lives! I'm certain she will be greatly missed... Uncle Lyman was that type of person as well. It was always fun to hear stories about his and Dad's boyhood antics. We have lost a great generation.
My deepest sympathy to my two younger cousins,
Carole
