Dennison E. Compton

Lieutenant Colonel Dennison E. Compton (US Army/Navy-Ret.), 91, of Newton, NC, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 9, 2017, at his residence. He was born September 6, 1926, in Niagara County, NY to the late Elbert Compton and Edna Luick Compton Nevling.
He served his country in the Navy and Army having enlisted in November 1943, and was honorably discharged in July 1970. During his military career, he earned the Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal w/Oak Leaf Cluster, Combat Infantry Badge, Navy Good Conduct Medal (2), American Theater Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with two battle stars, Vietnam Service Medal, National Service Defense Medal w/Oak Leaf Cluster, WW II Victory Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal and Vietnamese Gallantry Cross w/Silver Star.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, David S. Compton and sister, Patricia Siford.
He loved God, family and country in that order and his integrity, patriotism and devotion to God set a standard other strove to achieve. He knew no strangers, brought people together across continents and his larger than life personality will leave a lasting legacy.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 66 years, Margaret Lillis Compton; son, William S. Compton of Wilmington, NC; daughters, Kimberley A. Compton of Taylorsville, NC, Lisa (Donald) Compton Lamb of Hickory, NC, Patricia E. Compton of Tallahassee, FL; daughter-in-law; Veronica D. Compton of Lockport, NY; brothers, Charles (Moria) Compton of Niagara Falls, NY; Donald (Deborah) Compton of Niagara Falls, NY; grandchildren, Alicia (Kerry) Nohle, Summer Wainman, Lindsay Lamb, Leslie Lamb, Kimberly Kelly and husband Tanner, Olivia Compton and Harrison Compton; great-grandchildren, Brett Nohle, Carissa Nohle, Brooke Nohle, Knox Kelly and Alexander Faircloth;
The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.
