Catherine A.B. Hartley, 92, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2017, surrounded by her loving family in the comfort of her residence. Born and raised in Streatham, London, England, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Catherine (Drysdale) Ewing.
Catherine began working at Lloyd's Shipping Company in England. On September 8, 1945, she married Harry L. Hartley, U.S. Army Capt., in Swansea, Wales and immigrated to the United States shortly after in 1946. He was employed at Moore Business Forms for many years. Mr. Hartley passed away in 1964 after 19 years of marriage together.
Catherine was a hardworking, single mother of five children following the sudden loss of her husband. She began working for the Niagara-Wheatfield School District as an administrative assistant, and later was employed by Dr. Moody in Lewiston, NY, as a dental assistant and also by Dr. O'Neil in Niagara Falls, NY, as an oral surgeon assistant for several years. She then began working as a scheduling manager for the students of the dental medicine program at University at Buffalo. After many years of dedication to her career, Catherine retired in 1985 from the Frankie Foundation in Massachusetts.
Mrs. Hartley was a devout member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church upon arriving in LaSalle in the late 1940s. She was also a member of the Parent-Teachers Association and the 48 Club in LaSalle, a club made up of "war brides" spanning from all over the country who settled in the area.
Catherine loved the outdoors and had vivid memories of the ocean and hills back home in England. She also enjoyed camping with her family and the Fraser family in Stony Brook, NY. Catherine was an avid reader and gardener, highly noted for her beautiful gardens at her former residence in Colonial Village. She was also the first woman to obtain her driver's license in Colonial Village. After losing her vision to macular degeneration, Catherine continued her love for reading by listening to audio books. Above all, Catherine cherished the times spent with her children and grandchildren.
Mrs. Hartley is survived by four children, Nanette (Arthur) Hilson, William (late Jennifer) (Jane) Hartley, Douglas (Kristy) Hartley, Barbara (Daniel) McDermott; and was predeceased by one daughter, Jane (late Murray) (Edward) Murnan; and her sister, Nanette Ewing. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Patrick, Justin, David, Jane, Michael and Alex; four great-grandchildren; a special cousin, Robbie Gordon of Australia; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 10th from 4-7 PM at the M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 Military Road, Niagara Falls. Funeral services will be celebrated on Saturday at 11 AM at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 616 Cayuga Drive, Niagara Falls, followed by interment at Acacia Park Cemetery.
