Betsy Szymanski

Betsy Szymanski, long-time resident of Youngstown, passed away at Niagara Hospice House on August 6th following a long battle with emphysema. She was 77. Betsy was born and raised in Minneapolis where she grew up loving ice-skating on the lakes, ballet dancing, and hanging out with her friends.
In her early 20's she went on a year-long adventure to New Zealand and Australia. She then had interesting stints of employment at Daytons, Prudential, and Northwest Airlines. She lived and worked in Chicago for several years where she met and married her husband, Stan.
Following the birth of their two sons, she moved to Youngstown in 1974 and quickly became beloved by all the neighborhood kids. She served as a President of the Collingwood Neighborhood Association and was active in the Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.). Betsy and a few others founded the Lew-Port Parent-Teacher Group, which evolved into the PTA, and she later was named a Teachers' Union Most Outstanding Parent Volunteer.
Betsy was a voracious reader (mostly mysteries), loved books of all kinds, and was an active volunteer in the Lew-Port school libraries and at the Youngstown and Lewiston Public Libraries. Later she volunteered as an ESL tutor and at Memorial Hospital in Niagara Falls.
She never played soccer but fell in love with the game when her sons were little. She was an avid supporter of feminist causes. She loved to travel and visited 26 countries, plus Antarctica. Betsy was compassionate, a superb conversationalist, and had a keen sense of humor. She was a wonderful sister, wife, mother, aunt, and grandmother, and loved spending time with her kids and their friends, and later, their families. Betsy always considered herself very lucky and truly loved her life.
She is survived by husband Stan; sons, Matt (Theresa) and Chuck (Amy); three grandchildren; two sisters; and six nieces and nephews.
Memorial offerings may be made to HART of Lewiston or Niagara Hospice.

I have very fond memories of this special woman. Betsy was kind, engaging, intelligent and loved life. She was a proud mom to sons Matt and Chuck, who both share her passion for life, and a very supportive wife to my dear friend, Stan. My sincere condolences to all of you. Rest in peace, dear Betsy!

I played soccer with Matt in college. 30 years later we still remain good friends. A true testimony to his family core values of respect and friendship. A direct result of Betsey and Stan’s undying love and nurturing. I was fortunate enough to meet Betsey, Stan and Chuck, and I fondly referred to her as Bets...she was actually the best! Funny how those letters in her name, if manipulated ever so slightly , spell that out clearly!
Stan Matt And Chuck. God bless you all. You have already been truly blessed to share 50 years and more with your mom. May she Rest In Peace until we all meet again to whoop it up for eternity.
Peace and Love, Tommy
