Alexander B. Malec Alexander B. "Al" Malec of Niagara Falls, NY, died on January 20, 2014, at the Niagara Hospice House, with his daughter by his side. He was born on May 20, 1929 in Detroit, MI, the son of Julian and Rosalia (Swidergal) Malec and was a longtime resident of Niagara Falls, NY. Mr. Malec was a veteran of the US Army serving in Korea, Merchant Marine and past Commander of the American Legion Portage Post 1465. Al was a prolific writer and world traveler. His book "Extrapolosis" brought great acclaim. It was a collection of science-fiction short-stories and was published in multiple languages. His short story "Project Inhumane" was featured in Judith Merril's 11th Annual of the Year's Best. He was a freelance writer and sold many articles to various publications over the years. He liked to tell stories of the places he traveled, especially the Galapagos Islands, Paris, France and other European cities.He worked at the Niagara Junction Railroad, the Carborundum Company and was self-employed for many years. In later years, he loved to take 5-mile walks to feed the birds and squirrels in the former Love Canal area. Al's final gift was to the Anatomical Gift Program at the University of Buffalo.. He is survived by his daughter, Cheryl (Ray) Kulick of North Port, FL; a daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Malec of Madison, OH; granddaughter, Sarah Schindler of Geneva, OH; and great-grandchildren, Lillian, Isaac and Vincent; sister, Rose Sieracki of North Tonawanda, NY; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert Malec; brothers, Ted Malec, Stan Karp and Henry Karp.. There will be no service at Mr. Malec's request.
